Being the second largest country in the world, encompassing six different time zones and having a crazy obsession with macaroni cheese; there is plenty of weird but wonderful facts you probably didn’t know about Canada!

We found a long list of facts but we whittled it down to just 10 of the most unusual things about Canada:

1.Mac ‘n’ Cheese Crazy

Yes let’s start with this strange one, we all love some macaroni cheese but do you love it like the Canadians do? Can you believe Canada consumes more Mac ‘n Cheese than any other country in the world. They are known to chow through 1.7 million boxes of it weekly, that’s over 50% more then Us consumers.

2. Santa is Canadian

Whether you believe in Santa Claus or not, it’s interesting to know but Santa is actually Canadian! The Canadian government actually declared him as a citizen and have claimed his address too, North Pole H0H0H0.In fact you can send letters to Santa in any language and one of his many elves will answer all of them, all 1.5 million of them.

3. Polar Bears Invasion

Canada is home to  15,500 of the world’s 25,000 polar bears! Apparently some residents of Churchill, leave their cars unlocked to offer pedestrians who might encounter Polar bears a safe hiding space.

 

4. Donut Lovers

Did you know that Canada has more donut shops than anywhere else in the world. I mean what more could you possibly want!

5. Netherlands Loves Them

Back in 1945 Ottawa kept a Dutch princess and her kids safe during a Nazi occupation of Netherlands in the second world war. So to say thank you the Dutch sent Ottawa 100,000 tulip bulbs as a way of saying thank you and ever since then the Dutch send tulips every year hence the Canadian Tulip Festival in Ottawa in May.

 

6. The Best Education

Canada has the best education, beating Japan to be the most educated country in the world. Canada would be ideal if you want your kids to grow up with only the best education. Also Canadian universities don’t really come with a hefty price tag as they are predominantly public rather than private.

 

7. Pineapple on Pizza?!

One of the most confusing pizza toppings was actually created by a Canadian! This pizza creation comes from Sam Panopoulos who lives in London, Ontario. He was first to make this master piece (questionable for some) at his restaurant back in 1962.

 

8. Snakes Everywhereee

Are you a fan of snakes, well if you are then you’ll be in for a surprise. Winnipeg has more snakes in one place then anywhere else, literally thousands upon thousands for you to observe.

 

9. Maple Syrups is Canada’s

Perfect topping for pancakes, maple syrup was actually created in Canada. 80% of the world’s maple syrup is actually created in Canada and 91% of that is made in Quebec alone.

 

10. Canada or Kanata?

Ever heard the story of how Canada got its name? When the french explorer Jacques Cartier met with the locals in the New World, they invited him to their Kanata which means village. However Cartier thought they were referring to the country and so he labelled the country as Canada.
