Volunteer Teacher - Samraong, Cambodia

Located in a small town in northwestern Cambodia, Greenway school offers more than 400 children the chance to attend lessons where they can improve their English skills. This school was developed in 2017 by people just like you who were looking to volunteer and help change the lives of people who live in poverty. Cambodia is full of fantastic sites such as ancient temples and fascinating historical buildings; however, it is sadly also one of the poorest countries in the world and lacks some of the necessities that other people and countries may take for granted. This program will be a minimum of 1 week and can be started any week throughout 2023 up until the end of 2024.

Greenway school was opened in 2013 to provide free education to those who couldn’t afford it. It was built by a group of volunteers just like yourselves, who were looking to make a difference and provide a much needed service to the locals of Samraong.

Program Breakdown

  • Live in Samraong, Cambodia and experience cultural exchange and gain valuable skills and knowledge
  • Volunteer as an English teacher and help shape the lives of the children of Samraong.
  • You will have an orientation day within your first week in Cambodia to help you settle in and learn a bit more about what you will be doing whilst you’re out there.
  • Have the opportunity to engage with the locals outside of your volunteering duties by joining in with activities such as volleyball in the local park
  • Travel to the famous city of Siem Reap and go sight seeing during your weekends and time off.

Requirements

  • At least a basic level of English
  • A copy of your passport
  • A CRB check
  • Modest clothing (covering the knees and shoulders) required while at school or in community

Duties for this Position

You will be required to teach a class size of anywhere between 10-30 students. Most students of which will possess a basic level of English but can be qualified anywhere up to level 5. Other duties will include:

  • Teaching English to children aged 6-15 years old
  • Preparing lesson plans to teach the children
  • Administering weekly progress tests
  • Provide the children with other help and advice where you can (this may include basic hygiene and sanitation advice, knowledge about your own culture)
  • Help to improve the local children’s educational prospects

Accommodation and Facilities

There are two types of rooms available; a standard room or you may choose to upgrade to a private room. These rooms may be more suitable for people who are travelling with families or as a couple, or for more mature participants as they offer more facilities and most of our private rooms are also located in a quieter area. Laundry facilities are not available on site so most participants will wash clothes by hand, but there are launderettes available locally at an extra cost.
